Rug Stain Removal in NYC
Red wine at a dinner party, coffee on the morning rush, a pet accident: most stains on a fine rug can be removed or greatly reduced, provided they are treated with methods that respect the dyes.

Every stain is different
Stains behave according to what caused them and what they landed on. Tannin stains like wine, coffee and tea respond to different treatments than protein stains like food or urine, or oily stains like cosmetics. Wool, silk and cotton each react differently too. Using the wrong product can set a stain or strip color around it.
Identifying and testing
We identify the stain and test the surrounding dyes for stability before choosing a treatment.
Targeted treatment
Spot treatments are applied in stages, gently worked and rinsed, rather than scrubbed. Patience matters more than strength.
A full wash
After treatment the rug is washed in full, which avoids the clean patch, or ring, that spot cleaning alone can leave.
Why stains come back
Many stains that seem to vanish after a home clean return days later. This is called wicking: residue deep in the pile or foundation travels back up to the tips as the rug dries. A full immersion wash and thorough rinse remove that residue rather than pushing it lower, which is why we prefer to treat stains at the workshop.
What to do before we arrive
Blot, do not rub. Use a clean white cloth and cold water, working from the outside in. Avoid household stain removers and hot water on wool or silk; they can set the stain or cause dyes to run. If a large spill has soaked the rug, keep it flat and raised with good air flow, and call us.

Before you book
What to expect and turnaround
Fresh stains respond best. Older stains, and those that have been treated with household products, may only reduce. We will tell you what is realistic before we start.
Where a stain has removed color, color restoration can help.
Most rugs return in about a week. Difficult stains needing repeat treatment can take longer, confirmed after inspection.
FAQ
Questions we hear often
Can you remove red wine from a wool rug?
In many cases, yes, particularly if it is treated soon and not set with heat or household cleaners.
Should I use a store-bought stain remover?
We advise against it on fine rugs. Many contain bleaching agents or optical brighteners that damage wool and dyes.
Will spot cleaning leave a ring?
It can. That is why we follow stain treatment with a full wash.
