Rug Cleaning in SoHo

Designers, galleries and showrooms often need rugs cleaned between installations, before a shoot or ahead of an opening. Tell us the date the rug has to be back and we will tell you honestly whether it is realistic, based on the rug and what it needs. Kilims, soumaks and other flatweaves have no pile to hide soil, and their wool is often thin and dyes vivid, so they need a careful hand. Vintage Moroccan rugs, from boucherouite to Azilal and Beni Ourain, vary widely in wool and dye quality and are tested piece by piece. Vintage Turkish rugs, often sun-faded to soft tones, are washed gently to keep that patina rather than fight it.

The tall windows that make SoHo lofts so appealing also fade rugs. Vintage pieces often arrive already sun-softened, and that patina is part of their appeal, but new or brightly dyed rugs can fade unevenly within a few seasons. Rotating rugs every six months, using UV film on the glass and keeping blinds partly closed in the strongest afternoon light all help. Where uneven fading has already happened, color restoration can bring the field back into balance.

For showroom and gallery rugs that are walked on by visitors all day, a light wash between seasons keeps them presentable and stops grit from wearing the pile.
