Rug Fringe Repair in NYC
The fringe is more than decoration. It is the end of the rug's warp, the threads the whole rug is built on. When it wears away, knots begin to fall out. We secure and rebuild fringe by hand so the rug stays whole.

Why fringe wears
Fringe takes the brunt of vacuum beaters, foot traffic and furniture. Cotton and wool warps wear thin, break and pull back toward the body of the rug. Once the protective end finish, usually a row of knotting or a narrow kilim band, is gone, nothing stops the pile knots from loosening row by row.
That is why fringe repair is often the most important repair a rug can have. A modest repair now protects the design you see.
How we repair fringe
The right approach depends on how much original fringe remains and how the rug was finished.
Securing the ends
Where the fringe is short but the knots are intact, we stabilize the end with hand-stitched overcasting or a new row of knots. This stops loss without changing the look of the rug.
Rebuilding fringe by hand
Where fringe is missing, we add new warp threads into the body of the rug and hand-knot them to match the original, in cotton, wool or silk as appropriate. Machine-sewn fringe strips are quick, but they do not hold the knots and we do not use them on hand-knotted rugs.
Restoring lost rows
If knots at the end have already been lost, we can reweave them before finishing the end, so the border is complete again.
Step by step
Our process
01
Assess the end
We check how much warp remains and how the rug was originally finished.
02
Wash
The rug is washed so new fringe can be matched to clean, true color.
03
Secure or rebuild
Ends are stabilized, or new warp is added and hand-knotted.
04
Finish
Fringe is trimmed evenly, groomed and checked against the opposite end.
Before you book
What to expect and turnaround
We will show you both ends of the rug at inspection. Often one end is worse than the other, and repairing both keeps the rug balanced.
New fringe looks bright at first and mellows with use and washing.
Securing ends usually returns with the wash, in about a week. Rebuilt fringe takes longer and is confirmed after inspection.
Our work
The process
Once the new fringe is in place, each end is finished by hand so it sits evenly and holds the last row of knots.
FAQ
Questions we hear often
Can you just sew on new fringe?
Sewn-on fringe does not hold the knots of a hand-knotted rug, so the rug keeps losing them underneath. We secure or rebuild the fringe from the rug's own structure.
My fringe is very short. Is that a problem?
Short fringe is fine as long as the end is secure. If knots are loosening, the end needs stabilizing.
Why do I need the rug washed first?
Clean fringe shows its true color and lets us match new material properly.
