Rug Odor and Pet Urine Removal in NYC
Pet urine is the most common reason a fine rug starts to smell, and the most misunderstood. Surface cleaning hides it for a while. We treat it where it actually sits, in the foundation of the rug.

Why urine odor comes back
Urine soaks through the pile into the cotton or wool foundation and often into the pad and floor beneath. As it dries, it leaves salts that reactivate whenever humidity rises, which is why a rug can smell worse on a damp day. Over time, urine also weakens fibers and can permanently change dye color.
Spot cleaning and sprays reach the surface only. Treating the whole affected area, front to back, is what removes the source.
How we treat it
Every rug starts with a careful inspection, then a treatment chosen for its fibers and dyes.
Locating the damage
We use UV light and inspection from the back of the rug to find every affected area, including old spots you may not know about.
Enzymatic treatment and flushing
Affected areas are treated with enzymatic solutions that break down the organic compounds causing the odor, then the rug is soaked and flushed so the residue is rinsed out rather than left behind.
Full wash and drying
The rug then receives a complete hand wash and pH-balanced rinse, and is dried quickly and evenly to prevent any new odor or browning.
Your pad and floor
If urine has reached the pad, it will usually need replacing; returning a clean rug to a contaminated pad brings the odor back. We will also mention if the subfloor may need attention, so the problem is fully resolved.

What to expect and turnaround
Most odors can be removed. Old urine sometimes leaves permanent color change, which we will point out at inspection so there are no surprises.
Mothproofing and moth treatment can be added while the rug is with us.
Odor treatment adds time for soaking and flushing. Most rugs return in about a week to ten days, confirmed after inspection.
FAQ
Questions we hear often
Can you remove dog and cat urine odor from a silk rug?
Often, with care. Silk needs gentler handling, and urine can affect silk dyes, so we assess it closely first.
Why does my rug smell worse when it is humid?
Dried urine leaves salts that release odor when they absorb moisture. Treating the foundation removes them.
Should I replace my rug pad?
If urine has reached it, yes. A contaminated pad will bring the odor back to a clean rug.
Do you treat musty or smoke odors too?
Yes. Musty, smoke and storage odors are treated during the wash with methods suited to the cause.
