Rug Cleaning in the West Village

West Village homes are often townhouses and brownstones with narrow staircases and rooms sized for smaller rugs. Many are fine pieces: scatter rugs, runners and room-size rugs chosen with care. We collect them by hand, wash and restore them in Brooklyn, and bring them back.

How pickup works in West Village

Most West Village buildings have no doorman, so we agree a time window with you directly and call ahead. Staircases here are often narrow with tight turns, so we roll rugs carefully, face in and pile with the nap, to a size we can carry without bending them. Runners are rolled on themselves and wrapped to protect the edges.

Stair runners

Stair runners wear at the nose of each step, where the pile folds and takes every footstep. When a runner is installed, it can often be lifted, washed at the workshop and reinstalled; if not, we will advise you. Worn treads can be rewoven, and edges that have frayed against the stringers can be rebound.

Smaller fine rugs

Small rugs are easy to overlook, but they tend to sit in doorways and beside beds and collect a surprising amount of grit. A fine Kashan or Caucasian scatter rug is washed with the same care as a room-size piece: dusted, dye tested, hand washed and dried flat.

Rugs in older homes

Older townhouses bring their own conditions: radiator heat that dries wool in winter, damp cellars and storage rooms, and floors that are not quite level. Rugs stored rolled in a basement or closet are where we most often find moth damage and mildew, so if you are putting a rug away, have it washed first, wrap it in breathable cotton rather than plastic, and store it off the floor. Rugs on uneven floors benefit from a good pad, which spreads the load and protects the foundation.

Radiator heat is worth watching too: keep rugs a little away from radiators where you can, since constant dry heat makes wool brittle over time.

We agree a time window with you directly and call before we arrive.
