Persian Rug Cleaning in NYC
Persian rugs range from finely knotted city pieces with silk highlights to robust tribal rugs woven on wool. Each is cleaned according to its construction and dyes, with gentle methods that keep the wool's natural softness.

City rugs and tribal rugs
Persian city workshops such as Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan and Nain produce dense, precise rugs with curvilinear designs, usually on cotton foundations. Isfahan and Nain rugs often add silk to outline the design, which brings its own cleaning considerations. Heriz rugs from the northwest are heavier and geometric, built to take daily use. Tribal and nomadic rugs such as Qashqai and Bakhtiari are often woven on wool warps, with lively, irregular color.
These differences matter in the wash. Cotton foundations can brown if they dry slowly; wool foundations shrink and distort if handled roughly; silk highlights need cooler water and careful handling to protect their sheen.
Dyes and abrash
Older Persian rugs were mostly dyed with natural sources such as madder for reds and indigo for blues. These are usually stable, but synthetic dyes appeared in many regions in the twentieth century and some can run. Every color is tested before washing.
Many Persian rugs show abrash, gentle bands of color variation where a new batch of hand-dyed wool was used. It is a natural feature, not a stain, and a careful wash makes it more beautiful rather than less.
Why harsh chemicals do harm
Good Persian wool is rich in lanolin, the natural oil that gives it softness, luster and resistance to soil. Strong detergents, high-alkaline cleaners and bleaching agents strip that lanolin and leave the wool dry, brittle and quicker to soil again. We use gentle, wool-appropriate solutions and a pH-balanced final rinse so the pile stays soft and the colors stay clear.

Before you book
What to expect and turnaround
Most Persian rugs show their best color after a wash. Fading from sun and wear to the foundation will still be visible, and we will point them out.
If fringe, edges or worn areas need attention, we explain the options before doing anything.
Most Persian rugs return in about a week. Silk-detailed pieces and any repairs take longer, confirmed after inspection.
FAQ
Questions we hear often
Is my Persian rug safe to wash in water?
Yes, when the dyes are tested first and the rug dries quickly and evenly. That is how these rugs have been cleaned for generations.
What is abrash?
Natural bands of color variation from different batches of hand-dyed wool. It is a feature of the rug, not damage.
My Nain has silk outlines. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but it needs care: cooler water, gentle handling and attention to the silk while drying.
Can you tell me where my rug is from?
We can often give a general idea from the weave and design, but we do not provide formal appraisals.
