Rug restoration
Rug Color Restoration in NYC
Sun, wear, spills and earlier cleanings can leave a rug with faded patches, bled colors or worn areas that show the white foundation. Color restoration brings the rug back into balance.

Common color problems
Most color issues fall into a few types, each with its own remedy.
Dye bleed
When a rug gets wet and dries slowly, unstable reds and blues can migrate into the ivory and lighter areas. Bleed caught early can often be reduced significantly with a controlled color-correction wash.
Sun fading
Rugs near windows fade unevenly. Faded fibers have lost dye, which cannot be washed back, but carefully applied color can restore depth and even out the difference.
Worn areas
Where the pile is low, the light foundation shows through and reads as a pale patch. Retouching the knot ends can make the area recede. Where the pile is gone, re-weaving is the better repair.
How we work
We test the existing dyes first, then use stable, professional dyes applied by hand. Color is built up gradually and checked in daylight conditions. For re-weaving and binding, we dye wool by hand to match. The goal is always a natural result that fits the rug's age, not a newly painted look.

Bleed is treated in a controlled wash; other rugs are cleaned first.

04
Set and dry
Color is set, the rug is dried flat and checked again.

What to expect and turnaround
Color work is judged by eye and is not an exact science. We show you what is realistic for your rug before we start.
Recent dye bleed responds best. If your rug has just been flooded or wet, call us promptly and keep it flat and ventilated.
Color restoration usually takes longer than a wash alone. We confirm the timeline after inspection and testing.
FAQ
Questions we hear often
Can faded color be washed back?
No. Fading is lost dye. It can be restored with careful retouching, but not by cleaning alone.
My rug bled after a spill. Can it be fixed?
Often, especially if it is treated soon. Keep the rug flat and dry and contact us.
Will the color stay?
We use stable, professional dyes and set them properly. Rugs should still be protected from strong direct sun.
